Aso Base has been my favorite stay in Japan so far. There are cozy spots all over the house, and the sofas and futons were wonderfully soft. I loved that each bathroom had its own wall theme, cats, jellyfish, or lizards, and the shower areas had shampoo, conditioner, soap, and a hair-drying space with a great view. The dorm beds in the women’s room even have a blue-sky wallpaper like Toy Story. Yoshi and Myong made me feel welcome from the start. Yoshi carried up my huge suitcase when I arrived, and offered to help again when I left, which I needed. The kitchen is very well stocked, with drinking water from the tap, seasonings, and teapots. There are spare blankets and pillows too, including animal-shaped ones. I spent my four nights with Mr Snuggles, a grey cat pillow with its eyes closed in a smile. There was also a pink pig and a shaggy sheep. One of my favorite details was a little music nook with a table, CD player, and Japanese, international, and relaxing music CDs, plus audiobooks. The images arranged around it were thoughtfully chosen, with dolls bringing them to life. I looked up several tracks on Spotify and plan to keep listening. I’d read comments saying the rules were strict, and that the hosts wouldn’t open the door for people in the rain. There are rules, but Yoshi and Myong are looking after a big house with help from one cleaner, so routines make sense. There’s storage, and plenty to do nearby if you’re waiting. It’s a small town with lots of good restaurants. The shop beside the station selling local products is worth visiting more than once, the region’s best onsen is three minutes away, and there’s a Lawson across the street. Aso Base made coming back each day something I looked forward to. It’s a warm, welcoming place for chats, games, reading, and tea by the fireplace, with lovely lighting all around. I booked four nights and wished I’d booked eight. Kamsahamnida and Domo Arigato, Myong and Yoshi!!!

The staff are friendly, the place is clean and cozy, and it’s close to Aso station, restaurants, a convenience store, and an onsen. There’s a shared kitchen and a coin-operated washing machine. Noise doesn’t carry perfectly, as some reviews mention, but it seemed normal to me. Bring earplugs and you should be fine.

This little lodge sits at the foot of mt. Aso, about a five-minute walk from Aso station. The owners speak English and Korean as well as Japanese, so it was easy to communicate. Rooms and facilities are very clean and well kept, almost obsessively so. They offer both bunk beds and private rooms, and there’s a big balcony overlooking mt. Aso. The kitchen is spacious and has plenty of equipment for cooking, while the lounge is beautiful, with a wooden table and a japanese style room. Booking takes a bit of effort because rooms don’t appear much on booking sites. You need to request a reservation on their website, which is available in English. Check-in and check-out times are quite strict, and you can’t use the facilities outside those hours, but luggage storage is available.

It looks and feels like a great hostel, but nights were incredibly noisy. We chose a private room to get away from the noise, yet every footstep in the hall came through, along with conversations clear enough to follow word for word. We only fell asleep after the last guest went to bed, then woke a few hours later when the first person got up. If you sleep very deeply, maybe it won’t bother you. For anyone who wants a quieter night, this might not be the right place.

I’ve stayed here four times over eight years. It’s one of my favorite guest houses in Japan, with a useful kitchen and clean dorms. The beds have lots of room above your head, so there’s no banging it. There’s also a nice Onsen close to the railway station.
