Kannawa Onsen Hotel Sansuikan

We had a private-bath room, and that onsen was pure bliss. The room was spacious, the open-air bath had an amazing view, and both dinner and breakfast were wonderful. It’s a great ryokan close to the Beppu hells, with several room types to choose from. Highly recommend.

The location is handy for seeing the hot springs attractions: the “Blue Hell” is a short walk away, and there’s an easy bus route to the “Red Hell” springs. Getting here felt confusing at first, but any bus from Beppu Station that stops at Kannawa Bus Stop will do. The entrance is five minutes west of the stop. I stayed in a traditional Japanese-style room and found it clean, comfortable, and amazing, with a great view over Beppu. Staff were friendly and helpful, even though English was a bit difficult for them. The outdoor onsen on the first floor was incredibly relaxing and amazing, though very hot, so take it slowly. Definitely worth trying if you stay here.

A calm, fresh place to stay in Beppu. The spa, the view, and breakfast were all nice. It isn’t luxurious or gorgeous, but it meets the right standard for Japanese culture. Highly recommended!

We stayed in a room with a private spa, which was convenient for foreigners who aren’t used to public bathing. The staff were thoughtful and attentive, and the set dinners and breakfasts were excellent. A traditional spa hotel.
