This was the first place in several weeks of traveling around Japan that we were sad to leave. It felt wonderfully homey, like staying at a friend’s place, except your friend has several lovely hot spring baths at home. The owner was so welcoming, kind, and accommodating, and we enjoyed chatting with him. It’s also well located for exploring the local onsens. I hope I can return to Beppu and stay at Mikasaya again someday.
A pretty decent local homestay-style place in a great location. The bathtub with onsen water was good.

The host was very friendly and helpful, and the onsen was relaxing. It’s a quiet little ryokan in a small village. A taxi to or from Beppu Station costs ¥2200. Local bus AS60 stops very close to Mikasaya and costs ¥400 to or from Beppu Station. It goes as far as Oita.
We stayed four nights and could use the three hot spring baths privately around the clock, which was great. The baths at the inn were absolutely lovely, and the room stayed warm and comfortable with heat from the hot springs. We hardly ran into anyone else, so it was easy to relax and move around as if we were at home. We chose a room with its own toilet, which made trying a rental room for the first time easy. Bath towels and yukatas cost extra. They also brought a kettle of hot water each day, handy for making tea in the room.
