Really good place to stay, clean and reasonably priced, with a friendly owner. The free snacks and Japanese sake tasting were the best service I've come across.

With accommodation prices in Fukui going up because of the Shinkansen, I looked around for somewhere to stay while going out for drinks with a junior colleague I know well. I checked the reviews first, so bringing my own toothbrush, towel, and other amenities turned out to be a good call. The owner owns the property, and the toilets and baths are all shared. The toothpaste in the bathroom seemed especially unhygienic and gross, so I was glad I had brought my own. At check-in, the owner explains the available services and things to keep in mind. He's service-minded, pleasant, and the price is reasonable. I appreciated him driving me to the station, too. Sake, instant noodles, and drinks are generally free to use. I'd read that the owner can get annoyed when guests take them, and I did get a sense of that. I only had a little tea the next morning, but the owner came downstairs, perhaps because of a noise, and seemed to check how much I had used, maybe by looking around in the refrigerator. I suppose they believe it's virtuous to keep prices as low as possible and let guests use whatever they like. But I barely used anything, and I think they should stop congratulating themselves over that and simply charge more. I don't need pushy service. They're nice, but guests are paying for a stay that includes these services. For me, it comes out to a three, neither good nor bad.
