The convenient location was the only thing I liked. I booked three nights, but the room was so bad that I lost money and found somewhere else for the second and third nights. I couldn't rest properly, let alone enjoy the trip. I've been to Japan many times, and this was the first hotel this terrible for me. It ruined my image of Japanese hospitality and felt like a disgrace to the country. It felt like paying to be tortured, so if suffering is what you're after, this is the place. The room was unbearably hot. Outside it was around 5-10°C, while inside it was close to 30°C. We couldn't sleep and woke up drenched in sweat. The ventilation did practically nothing, whether we tried the heater or the fan. Even the hallway had better airflow. They put us in a smoking room even though we clearly said in the booking that we don't smoke. They said a non-smoking room couldn't be arranged during the holiday season, which I could understand. But the smoke smell was overwhelming, worse than the smoky arcades downstairs. I bought an air freshener and sprayed it around, but it was no use. The service was extremely poor, apart from one friendly female staff member. I told the others it was too hot to sleep and asked them to check whether the air conditioning was broken. They just kept saying, "No, no, no." I tried explaining in Japanese with Google Translate, but they still wouldn't help. It was already late at night, so I asked if they could lend me an air purifier or even a simple fan. Again, all I got was, "No, no, no," and no help at all.
The location was amazing, and we liked the spacious room and its interesting layout. It is dated, but we loved that and felt like we'd gone back in time to the 80s/90s. There was a radio built into the bedside table, and we enjoyed its instrumental chill-out music.
Just steps from Hakata Station, the location is excellent for getting around the city. The hotel is over 50 years old, and it shows. It seems many guests smoked in the rooms for decades, so the smell can hit you when you first walk in. After running the air conditioner and air purifier for a few hours, it gets better. The room itself is fine and spacious by Japanese standards. The beds are a bit soft, but still comfortable.
The customer service was excellent, and Hakata Station is only a 60-second walk away, with loads of shopping and restaurants nearby. The rooms are large, spacious, functional, and have a unique design. You can control all the lights from the bedside console, and adjust the air conditioning and heater yourself. Some negative reviews mention poor lighting and smoke smells, but we had good lighting and clean air. Clio hotel has been the best hotel on our Japan trip! And no, I am NOT an employee of Clio Hotel!
The beds were good, in my opinion, and the price was fair. It's basically next door to the main station, so getting around town is super easy.
