Suihokaku Hotel

The room was about the usual size for a hotel in Japan. The station is around a 5-10 minute walk away, and there’s an onsen service. Like other Japanese hotels, toiletries are provided.

The high rating is mainly for the service and how quickly check-in went.

On my second stay in February 2026, I got a room where the air conditioning was hard to control. It was a cold, rainy night and the room took ages to warm up. I didn’t feel like complaining to the front desk, so I went to bed and caught a cold, even though I’d warmed up in the hot spring. The first time, the air conditioning had been odorless and comfortable, with an easy temperature control. This place is great value, with the basics of a business hotel plus all the amenities you need and a hot spring. There’s free coffee by the front desk. Minami-Fukuoka Station is three stops from Hakata, and it’s a five-minute walk from the hotel. I first thought it was a bit far when I was looking near Tenjin, but once you get used to the area it’s no problem. There’s a MaxValu and a convenience store in front of the station. Breakfast starts at 6:30. If you need to leave earlier, the 24-hour MaxValu is handy. The hot spring and sauna are in the next building. There’s one tub, about six tatami mats in size, and six chairs, so it gets pretty full. Get a bathing ticket from the front desk, and you can go in as many times as you like during business hours. There’s a manga-filled rest room between the bath and the front desk. Hotel prices have been going up, but this one costs about as much as dorms near Hakata Station and Tenjin, so I highly recommend it. There are also lots of tasty ramen places within a 10-minute walk.

The annex hot spring is only a few seconds’ walk away, and I was looking forward to using the sauna. But the women’s side was out of order the whole time, and the men’s side closed at odd times for cleaning. I think it only opened at 11 a.m., so even guests who went after the 10 a.m. checkout couldn’t use it. They didn’t contact guests in advance to explain or check whether this was acceptable. That felt dishonest and dismissive of guests. It was very disappointing, and I don’t think I’ll stay again.
