The Gate Hostel

The dorm is big, with almost 20 double beds, and it gets stuffy. There’s nowhere to put your bag and no lockers. The bed is a small double, so expect to squeeze together. On the plus side, the decor is modern, the bed is comfortable, the showers are decent, and the toilets are reasonably clean. The staff were no help with local questions. One couldn’t even estimate a taxi fare to the main train station, and for several basic questions the answer was just “I don’t know,” with no effort to help. It’s about a 10-minute walk to the subway, 25 minutes to Hakata Station, 20 minutes to Tenjin, and 25 minutes on foot to the port. There are better locations, though the price is good. I wouldn’t stay again.

It’s a good base for exploring Fukuoka. The main metro lines aren’t right nearby, but they’re close enough for a pleasant walk. The hostel was very clean and well run, and the shared amenities were great for a place like this. I’d recommend it to friends or family visiting this lovely city. Thanks for the hospitality!

The beds are comfortable, and it’s a decent place for a few nights. The atmosphere felt a little cold, though. They give you a band to show whether you want to talk to other people, which didn’t seem very necessary.
