I couldn’t sleep at all. The first-floor room by the entrance smelled awful, strongly of dust and fungus, and everything seemed covered in fungus. The bed and all the bedding smelled bad too, and the bed was uncomfortable. The hostel has just one bathroom for the whole house, up on the third floor. The first-floor toilet wasn’t clean either, and despite having a heated seat, it didn’t have a bidet. This made no sense to me.

The host was a huge help when a tree on the tracks caused a train cancellation. He went down to the station and checked the details for us. The place was nice, with a spacious room and balcony, a decent kitchen, and comfortable beds.

If you’re keen on onsen, I’d stay here in Gero rather than in Takayama. You can easily take a day trip to Takayama from here. It’s the only hostel in Gero, conveniently close to the train station, and much cheaper than a hotel or ryokan. The place is clean, with a kitchen for cooking and a living room for eating. Quiet hours make it easy to sleep at night.

The location is very convenient, and the staff were really nice. I had trouble sleeping, though, because the bunk beds shook with even the slightest movement. It made me worry about safety, and if two people are bunking together, either one moving can wake the other.

A kind owner who’ll try to help with any questions, and the place was clean. The walls are thin, though. You can sleep there and relax a little, and that’s about it. It’s fine, honestly fine, but there’s no luxury and you shouldn’t expect any.
