The baths were a real highlight, especially the thermal bath in the old storehouse. There’s a public bathing area, though getting comfortable with communal nudity was a challenge for me as a body-conscious Brit. I still found the whole experience relaxing and worthwhile. The hotel has a modern-ish take on an onsen stay, and I enjoyed it. The welcoming staff offered us robes and explained how things worked. There were free drinks and coffee with a view over the river. The workplace atmosphere felt very Japanese. Our lovely room had a bath on the balcony, where we watched rain fall from lightning-filled clouds. It’s a great hotel with a traditional style. Breakfast was a little odd, but fine.
The free parking and riverside view were great, and it’s a handy place to stop in Gifu. There are plenty of spa pools, and the hotel service really impressed me. 100/10.
There are old shops along the nearby street, with some interesting handicrafts to see, and restaurants close by. You can also try the Comoran fishing experience at night. The riverside location is nice, and the onsen has several kinds of hot spring water. It’s a venerable hotel with plenty of history, though I wouldn’t call it five-star. The rooms are decent, but dated.
The onsen area is really cute, and the location worked well for us, close to Gifu castle with a lovely view. There’s enough parking, and the staff are super friendly. At breakfast I especially appreciated the range of baby chairs. They had options for kids of different ages, so everyone could sit at the table.
From our balcony tub, we could watch cormorant birds fishing in the river in the morning, and adjust the bath temperature ourselves. We stayed one night and had an amazing time. The staff were wonderful, and the Kaiseki was 10/10. There are two public hot springs, with the men's and women's baths switching in the morning and afternoon. Highly recommend.
