I spent a couple of days in a double room with its own bath and toilet. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, face and hand wash, toothpaste, and a toothbrush were provided. Room wear could be borrowed, I think for 200 yen, and slippers maybe cost 100 yen, or you can get them at Donki. The fridge in my room was quite noisy, and the bed wasn’t very comfortable. Still, it’s inexpensive, so I think it works for backpackers.

Across the road there’s a big Mega Donki supermarket, which is very convenient. This is an affordable, no-frills business hotel. The room isn’t large, but it has most of what you need for a night or two. The Wi-Fi is fast enough, and there’s coin laundry and a place to heat up food.

The only thing I didn’t like was the bed, which felt too spongy. The staff were helpful and the place was clean, about a 10-minute drive from the city centre. Apart from the bed, it’s worth the money.

This place is actually called Okuro Inn, in Goryokaku. Goryokaku park is not too far by taxi, but the location is fairly remote. Goryokaku Station, the nearest JR station, is about 10 minutes away. The staff don’t speak English, though they have translation devices. Expect to spend on taxi rides or walk some distance to reach Hakodate’s main area.
