The food and service were the real highlights. Dinner was a ten-course feast, full of flavors we’d only come across in high-end Japanese cooking, and we were completely stuffed by the end. Go hungry. Breakfast the next day was just as generous, with six traditional courses. Service was perfect throughout. This place is set up for guests who want a proper Japanese ryokan experience, including traditional food. After the onsen, we wore traditional Japanese clothes to dinner. Getting there from Hakone station means waiting for the shuttle or walking uphill for about 15 minutes. We managed the walk and enjoyed it, but it’s a workout, and anyone with mobility issues should take the shuttle. The rooms are a little tired and could use an update, though that didn’t take away much from the quality of the staff and the rest of the stay. I’d return and recommend it.

The public onsen, with both indoor and outdoor baths, was lovely, and our traditional room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel and restaurant staff were kind and helpful. The food was beautifully prepared, and they took care with dietary restrictions. They also arranged a Western-style breakfast when we asked. We stayed for two nights a couple of weeks ago and had a really nice time. I gave the hotel 9 out of 10 on Booking because the in-room bathroom and toilet could use some renovation, which makes sense given that the building dates to the 1960s. Everything else felt perfect. My comments haven’t appeared on Booking for some reason, so I’m adding them here. Thank you!

They were especially thoughtful about food allergies in our group. In our experience, many places in Japan can’t adjust meals for allergies, so we really appreciated how flexible and careful the staff were. It made us feel looked after. The building is a bit older, but it’s well maintained and has plenty of charm. Staff were warm, attentive, and ready to help, while our clean, spacious room gave us lots of room to relax. Dinner and breakfast were both good, with a pleasing range of dishes and filling portions.

Dinner was incredible, and I had the traditional Japanese breakfast, packed with seafood and pickled vegetables. My partner is allergic to seafood, so they brought them a lovely Western-style breakfast instead. Our traditional room was gorgeous and cozy. We also had a private outdoor bath, which was warm and felt great against the cold mountain air. Probably one of the nicest places I’ve stayed. I hope to come back someday!

The waiter looking after our table was attentive, professional, and careful about every detail. The whole meal felt like dining at a Michelin-star restaurant, in both the quality and the care we received. At first we weren’t sure about wearing the kimonos provided for dinner, but when we saw everyone else in them, it felt natural and made the evening more special. The atmosphere at Aura Tachibana was peaceful and beautifully put together, and each course was a treat. It was a memorable introduction to staying at a traditional ryokan. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a refined ryokan experience.
