Hotel Musashiya

The breakfast was amazing. Lots of little bowls were ready for us, then a lovely older woman brought fresh hot fish, miso soup, rice, and pickles as well. Everyone was very nice, and the staff showed good standards when they put our luggage in our room while we were out sightseeing after leaving it at reception. The rooms are enormous, about three times the size of ones in Tokyo, with a traditional Japanese look, mats on the floor, and low beds and tables. There’s a great mountain and lake view, and the location works well for exploring Hakone. Hot water, green tea, and a welcome snack were in the room. It feels like this must have been a luxury hotel three decades ago. It’s quite worn, and I don’t think it’s been renovated since it opened. Scratched furniture didn’t bother us, but the air conditioner looked like it should be shut down. The toilet and shower doors need a proper cleaning with strong products, and the general cleanliness is low. If that doesn’t put you off, don’t hesitate to book.

The public onsen on the top floor was lovely, and I’d go every night. I only tried it once in the morning, but the view then was *chef kiss. The location worked great for us because we wanted to be near Lake Ashi and Tori gate. Thanks to the oba-chan and uncles for taking care of us, and take care! We stayed two nights with friends and were very well fed. Try the kaiseki dinner and traditional breakfast at least once. Each dish looked so carefully arranged on its plate, it was a treat for the eyes as well as the stomach. People mention that the place is dated, but we found it antique and homey, with everything clean, tidy, and neat. There was always hot water in the room. It felt like home, especially because the elderly staff were so friendly and tried their best to help despite the language barrier. Check the rooms before booking so you know what to expect. We have no regrets about staying here.

The lake area looked lovely from here, and the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was delicious, and the tea they made to welcome us was a nice surprise. The traditional accommodation has a rustic feel. They set up a futon in your room each night and collect it at breakfast. I didn’t try the public bath, but there’s an onsen and a karaoke room available.

The reception kindly explained the hotel and Hakone timetables to us. We booked one room for five people, and the location was convenient, about a 100-meter walk from the last bus stop. After playing table tennis, we went to the onsen on the fifth floor. The natural water was very warm, and the large, clean pool had plenty of space for ten people to use comfortably. The toilet follows an old style, so it was a little difficult for us since automatic toilets are common throughout Japan. Still, everything was very good.
