The natural onsen was such a treat after skiing, and the rooms, baths, and toilets were clean and quiet. Atarashiya Ryokan has 50 spacious tatami rooms, and breakfast is included. Dinner is available for ¥1700 per person, which is good value in the valley. The owners are lovely, though they don't speak much English. Booking and finding the place was a bit difficult. They can take ages to reply to emails, and the replies are in Google Translate. The nearest ski lift is a six-minute walk, the bus terminal is five minutes away, and the happo one gondola Adam is ten minutes away. One of the best traditional Japanese hotels in Hakuba, highly recommend.

The hot spring I'd been looking forward to was just right for a relaxing soak, not too hot. I was also impressed by the food: simple rather than fancy, made with lots of local ingredients and prepared with care by the landlady. The rice was especially delicious. It was my first stay, and the building surprised me. The woodwork is remarkable, with a frame put together by a master carpenter. The rooms were tidy, and without unnecessary services the place felt comfortable and restful. I'd definitely stay again on a trip to Hakuba. Thank you for the hospitality!

The location and building are both excellent, so I couldn't understand why it was so empty until I stayed there. There was no air conditioning in summer, and the refrigerator was shared. You also have to pay for a toothbrush, and there weren't any hand towels in the restroom. It's a shame. If they fixed those things, I think they'd get plenty of repeat guests.
