Little Alaskan Guest House

It took 20 hours of searching, but finding Little Alaskan was time well spent. Hakuba is expensive, and even with friends’ hostel discounts, a dorm would have cost 50% more than our room here. It’s not fancy, which suited us, and the room was much bigger than I expected, with super comfortable beds. We never had to wait for the shared shower. There’s also a little kitchen, boot room and washing machine. Happo One is a five-minute drive or a 45-minute walk away. Without a car, there are several restaurants and a big grocery store nearby. I wouldn’t necessarily suggest it for a solo traveler, since it’s a guest house rather than a social hostel. For couples or friends, or anyone who likes a quiet vibe, it was perfect.

The place was clean and comfortable, and the owner was kind and attentive. The room and common areas were already heated when I checked in and again when I got up in the morning, so they stayed warm. I had a room-only plan and left early to ski, but the stay was comfortable, and check-out was simple and unmanned. There’s a binding stand in the ski room, plus a shared kitchen, a bath with hot water and a clean toilet with a bidet. It’s near the Hakuba ski resorts and bar district, and good value for money.

They provide a refrigerator, seasonings and dishes, and there’s a free washing machine. Parking costs 500 yen per day, reservation may be required.
