I’m just describing what I experienced during my first stay, without any bias. Despite seeing Kamoshika Views recommended by Trip Advisor, I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends for these reasons. The eight-person room was cramped and uncomfortable when I needed to recover after a day of snowboarding. It had four tightly packed bunk beds, with beds about 1.8 by 1.0 meters each and only a 90-centimeter-wide aisle between them. There was little room for luggage under the lower bunks, so I had to open it in the narrow shared corridor outside the room, about two meters from the toilet. There was a sewage problem for three days, which meant nobody could shower at night. That made it seem the house wasn’t ready for guests. I also felt discriminated against by the female staff member, whose service wasn’t up to standard. The male staff member’s service was up to standard. Kamoshika Views is one kilometer from the main road, reached by a very steep, narrow road. There was no warning from Kamoshika Views that only a four-wheel-drive vehicle was safe on the snowy, icy surface. One of our cars couldn’t make it there. Another took three hours to climb the hill, with the rear end moving uphill, even though the driver was skilled. The location wasn’t in snowy and icy conditions.

Rus is easygoing and knows a lot. He’s happy to give guests lifts to the slopes or town, and likes hanging out with them, which is great if that’s your thing. The other guests were friendly and interactive while still being respectful. There are a few private rooms, but mostly bunk beds, so you’ll probably meet other travelers. The place has a relaxed vibe and is still tidy, well organized, and well maintained. There’s a spacious living room with a fireplace, and the dining area has amazing panoramic views. They keep improving the place during the off-season.

The view is unbeatable for a Hakuba property, and the actual backpackers had the best facilities I’ve come across. Rus was a great host, and I had a fantastic stay, including a great party one night. The beds are comfortable and fairly soundproof, and the place was clean, cozy, and warm. I’d recommend it 11/10.

Thanks for having us at Kamoshika for the past two weeks. The lodge was amazing, and Gemma and Zack made sure we were comfortable. The shuttle service was a lifesaver. Their company and warm hospitality were wonderful, and they answered our questions and gave us lovely recommendations. Renting gear from Rhythm was very convenient, and they also have a free shuttle. We’d recommend Kamoshika to anyone traveling to Hakuba!

We stayed in early winter 2023. The hotel was clean and comfortable, and the staff were exceptionally nice and friendly. Having a shared space with a kitchen and beautiful views made the stay feel idyllic.
