Pension Starlight Azumi

After four nights at Pension Starlight Azumi, we were genuinely sad to leave. Our children, aged 5, 4, and 2, felt right at home there. The place has been operating for 64 years, but it’s thoughtfully laid out, with everything we needed: a sunny, cosy living room with a real fireplace and cuckoo clock, bedrooms with hooks and shelves, a spacious drying room that worked well, and heated bathrooms. The elderly couple who run it and their small team were so friendly and helpful. They went out of their way for us, and the simple homemade breakfast, with homemade strawberry, pear, and blueberry jam, was a hit. The kids loved them, and we miss them already. It’s also conveniently located, only a 2-3 minute walk from Rhythm ski rental and about 5-7 minutes from Evergreen Ski school. I timed the walk through the snow at a relaxed pace and it took 5 minutes. A few restaurants are across the road, and prices are very reasonable. After lots of corporate travel, staying here with my family reminded me how special a small, home-run pension can feel. I’d recommend it to anyone wanting a cosy, low-key stay in a good location.

The place has a homely feel, with a relaxing living room instead of a big lobby. I stayed a few nights before heading home because of an injury, and the staff were incredibly considerate, even helping with my bags. On my departure day, Ikuo got up at 4:30 to make me tea before I left. It was easily the best service I’ve ever had.

Even though it was my first stay at Starlight Azumi, I felt right at home. The room and facilities were very clean, and the staff were friendly. It was a wonderful visit, and I’d love to come back next year. Highly recommend.

A real home away from home in Hakuba. The bed and breakfast owners are friendly, the place is comfortable, and the location and hospitality are both great. Highly recommended.
