Jukeiso

Once we set aside our usual western expectations and settled into the authentic ryokan style of Jukeiso, we really enjoyed our stay. The freshly prepared set meals come in Japanese or western style. They aren’t large, but breakfast was enough to get us going. The rooms are simple, with a low table and chairs and a small high table by the window; futons replace them in the evening. That’s part of the experience. Jukeiso is a quaint, traditional ryokan-style hotel on the far side of Miyajima, perched above town with excellent views of many attractions. It’s about a 10-minute walk through the island, and the hotel will pick up your cases if you leave them at the ferry terminal. For anything beyond basic interactions, be ready to speak Japanese or use Google Translate. There’s a small gift shop opposite reception with some nice-looking authentic products to take home. Highly recommended.

We stayed for two nights and tried the private onsen. The atmosphere was so friendly, and the traditional Ryokan service was great. Highly recommend, and enjoy the dinner!

We had a good stay at Jukeiso, with friendly, helpful staff throughout. There’s a public bathhouse as well as a private bath, which you need to book at check-in and can use for 30 minutes.

The dinner and breakfast were both excellent, and having the private outdoor bath after dinner really made our day. We visited during cherry blossom season 2025. The staff suggested temples and other things to see, and they were extremely friendly, helpful, and so polite. Our room was clean and cozy, with a lovely view over the shrine, just what you’d expect from a traditional Ryokan. They brought tea to the room when we arrived. Staff picked us up at the ferry terminal and took us back, or can just bring your luggage there if you’d rather walk around the island on departure day. This is what Japanese hospitality looks like!
