There are comfortable beds, modern and efficient room heating and air-conditioning, and every room has its own onsen bath. The gardens are superb, with lots of small rooms and lovely decorated nooks where you can get lost with a good book. The service was gracious and among the best I've experienced. This is a luxurious, romantic ryokan in the hills of Hirado. Hirado isn't often visited, but I'd strongly recommend this place to anyone making their way to the charming island.

I came for the flounder and tried the basic course, which was quite filling, as you can see in the photo. I heard they've been holding a flounder festival for 30 years, though this was my first visit. They also have a grouper festival, so I'd like to come back for that.

Breakfast and dinner were both incredibly delicious. I think the broth may have been the reason, and I wish I'd asked the chef's name. The rooms were clean and meticulously maintained, and the bath was just the right temperature for several soaks. It was peaceful too, with only the sounds of insects and birds. The service was attentive and courteous. I chose to have meals in my room, although some earlier reviews mentioned dining somewhere else. In-room dining is very relaxing, and I hope they keep offering it.

The spring water was the only good thing. The first-floor room smelled moldy, the carpet smelled like sweaty feet, I could feel the mattress springs, and the towels were old.
