This is a quiet hotel that seems to be used mostly by locals. Guests can sample free fruit wine, draft beer, and sake, along with tea, coffee, and soda from the machines. Yukatas and slippers are complimentary in the lobby for use in the comfortable indoor and outdoor sulfur onsens. The outdoor bath is especially nice on snowy nights. The ryokan has been refurbished for modern guests but keeps its traditional feel, with authentic tamami and dining areas alongside a fridge, basic TV, kettle, and electric pot. Our room was already warm when we arrived, with ice water in the kettle and hot water in the pot, which was a nice touch. There's also a comic corner and, for adults, cigarette and beer vending machines beside massage chairs. I didn't use those.

The staff were really friendly and helpful, and I was especially impressed by the onsen, both indoors and outdoors. The Japanese-style room is quite old, but that didn't bother me. The free-flow drink bar had alcohol and craft beer, which I loved. There's a reasonable limit on when you can drink.

The all-inclusive setup made the weekend feel easy, without getting nickel-and-dimed, and the staff added a few extras that made it special. Craft beer in the lobby was a great idea, too. We stayed at Azumaya in Yamagata in a beautiful room, with attentive staff and a great experience overall. Dinner was great, especially the steamed local beef, while breakfast was normal. The in-room bath and amenities were very nice. Thanks for a lovely weekend!

Set against a green hillside, this hotel feels like a lovely place to spend a holiday weekend with someone you love. The hot spring on the 7th floor has a breathtaking view. I'd highly recommend it.
