Hotel Pacific Kanazawa

Coming back after a day out really felt like coming home. The staff were warm and made an effort to speak English, and there’s a lounge attached where you can stop for coffee or a drink. I also liked the paid granola bowl at breakfast. The location made getting around easy: Omicho Market is right next door, and Kanazawa Station, Kanazawa Castle Park, and other sights are walkable. A couple of cafes and local restaurants are nearby too.

The hot cocoa was delicious, and the friendly staff made it feel nice to come back after a long day. The hotel also shares handy suggestions for local cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. We rented bikes for 300 Yen per bike for three hours, with extra charges for longer, and riding around felt manageable since Kanazawa is quieter than some larger cities. The building and rooms are a little small, though still fairly spacious for the location and price. The market, castle, and gardens are all within about a 10-minute walk, and the station is around 20 minutes away on foot.

The staff made the biggest impression on me. They were kind, friendly, and helpful, and when I couldn't find somewhere to eat, they really went out of their way to sort it out. The public areas have a relaxed, funky feel, with a mellow bar for coffee and drinks. Rooms are sensible and have the useful things, with a few clever touches. They're not large, but fine by Japan standards. It's a charming, unpretentious little hotel at a reasonable price, close to the market and many sights, and about an easy 25-minute walk from the station. Highly recommended.

For this trip, it had the best price-to-performance of all the hotels we stayed at in Japan. The location helps a lot: Omicho market is right beside it, the castle is a few minutes away on foot, and there are plenty of restaurants and izakayas nearby. The room was clean and compact, as is common with Japanese hotels, but we could fit both suitcases and still move around. Breakfast choices were limited to things like yoghurt, muesli, and fruit, so I wouldn't recommend it. With a fridge and watercooker in the room, plus a market and convenience stores close by, getting breakfast yourself should be easy.
