The staff were friendly and forthcoming, and we were glad we chose the Takasago over several similar-looking hotels. Our room was huge, beautifully maintained, and tastefully decorated, with lovely tatami mats. The sento on the top floor was spotless and had a sauna and amenities. We may have caught a special deal, but for what we paid, it was the best value we found anywhere in Japan.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the hotel is within comfortable walking distance of Kochi station, Kochi castle, and all the places to eat and shop. Our room was large, which is unusual in Japan, and laid out very well. The balcony looked out over the canal, which was lovely. I had a very pleasant stay. Breakfast could use some work, especially the western options.

I booked a single room at the last minute and was upgraded at check-in to a lovely, spacious tatami room with two beds. The staff were exceptionally kind. They remembered me whenever I came back and even offered to let me feed the koi in the lobby. The building is a bit old and scuffed in spots, but the overall feel was lovely. Street noise was the one downside. I’ll stay here again next time I’m in Kochi.
