Hotel Okus Kumamoto

I loved looking out the window at the big trees. The room felt large compared with other hotels at a similar level in Japan, and the bathroom was very new. The building itself is old, but has a charming, unusual style. Soundproofing could be better. I could hear the TV next door, though not people, and it didn’t bother me much overall. The staff were very friendly.

Parking is something to keep in mind in Kumamoto: most vertical parking facilities have a 1.5m height limit, so a taller car needs to go to an off-site lot. It’s no big deal, just useful to know. The room itself was stylish and well furnished, and the double bed was a proper size, which was great for me as a Westerner. The bathroom suite was brand new and clean, with a full-size bath to stretch out in. The only downside was how loudly the room doors shut, unless it was the animals next door making the noise. The staff were competent and professional. For an affordable hotel, this place is head and shoulders above the rest, and an absolute bargain with style and class.

I left some belongings at the hotel and had already gone home, but Okus kindly sent them to me. That made for some of my best memories. The hotel sits on beautiful Kumamoto’s 100-year-old boulevard, and the antique design, welcoming staff and comfortable accommodations were all just right.

The room was a little small, but the price was reasonable, so what can you say. The location is good for getting around the city, and the tram stop is just a three-minute walk away.
