A peaceful place to get away from busy city life, with nature all around. There’s a small river where kids can play, and at night you can hear Okinawan owls calling. A local general store and restaurant are on site, though if you’re staying a few days, you may want to bring in some food.

I don’t stay overnight here, but I visit a few times a year for cultural events. During Golden Week in Japan, hundreds of carp streamers, or koi, flutter above the river. The museum inside the office is easy to miss, but worth paying a couple of hundred yen to see. Photos are allowed, and there are some unusual items inside.

The view alone made the drive worthwhile. We rented a house that was more than adequate, and the traditional tatami and futon beds were comfortable. We had an amazing time here!
