The room was spacious, with plenty of closet space, and the bed had outlets on both sides that worked with multiple plug types. The bathroom was large and clean. It was quiet too, since the hotel is a fair way from the busy part of the city and the other guests were quiet. The distance didn’t feel unreasonable to me. There’s a tiny lunch place west down the street, Bon Bon8 Chome-73 Honmachi, Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto, 605-0981, Japan. I really recommend trying the curry, and the Japanese jazz they play while you sit at the counter is fabulous. I was happy with my stay overall, but I wouldn’t come back or recommend it to solo travelers. Check-in is mostly virtual, and I saw someone at the front desk only once or twice during my four nights. The property doesn’t seem to be staffed around the clock, and the front entrance isn’t keyed, which made me uneasy. I was put in the first room right off the lobby, on the ground floor. As a woman traveling alone, that combination made me nervous. Luggage storage is limited too, just a keyed rope under a table in the lobby. For couples or groups who want to stay in Kyoto’s outer neighborhoods, this seems like a perfect fit. It’s less ideal for women traveling alone.

The room is SPACIOUS, and after staying in Tokyo hotels it felt really relaxing. Soft pillows, all the amenities, water and fresh towels every day, plus a coffee station you can use anytime. Very nice for the price. It’s an unmanned hotel, though there’s almost always a guy at reception during the day if you need help. Check-in is at 4pm, and I’d do it online to save time. The walk from Kyoto Station is about 20 minutes and a bit uphill. Bus and subway stops are five minutes away. There’s a new coffee shop right next door with vegan, Muslim-friendly tarts and coffee, worth a look. Head down the hill and you’ll find a shop run by an elderly couple selling homemade and locally grown food. 10/10

The room was large and came with a small, decent garden. The hotel is very close to some must-see places, including Kiyomizu-dera. I drove, so I can’t really say whether getting around from here is convenient. The hotel staff were very nice, as you’d expect in Japan!

It’s a quiet, simple hotel tucked among homes in Kyoto’s Higashiyama area, easy to miss. Check-in and checkout are self-service, and there are a good number of amenities. The room was a good size for two, the onsite laundry is free, and there’s free Nespresso coffee in the lobby. Most contact with staff is through a tablet, though you might get lucky and see someone there. One thing to watch for: when booking through a third party such as Booking or Agoda, you may be charged extra at check-in. I was charged the full amount when I arrived and had to escalate it with the third party before the hotel refunded me. It was a small hassle, but be aware.

The breakfast at their cafe was delicious, and the space looked beautiful. My room at HOTEL KYOTOLOGY was really spacious, with high-class amenities. The shower was one of the best I’ve ever had. I stayed last week and had an amazing time. Thank you so much.
