I really liked the breakfast, it felt homemade and was healthy Japanese food rather than the same dull continental spread you get in a lot of hotels. The hotel was good value too. It’s about a three-minute walk to the train station, with buses for Kiyomizu-dera nearby, and Shijo-dori is around five minutes away on foot. Nishiki Market, Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, and Gion took me about 10-15 minutes to walk to. I got there before check-in, so they kept my luggage and had already brought it up to my room when I came back at 3pm. The room was modern, clean, and had dimmable lights. Their eco-cleaning worked fine for me: I left the eco-bag and rubbish outside each day and they replaced my towels and took the rubbish. The PJs were among the most comfortable I’ve worn in a hotel. Laundry was easy, either with coins or through an app and Google Pay, and reception had umbrellas to borrow for rainy weather. It was my first time in Japan, and I’d heard hotel rooms there were tiny. This one was a decent size.

The cleaning schedule was every three days under what they called an eco-friendly practice, and my sheets were dirty and clearly needed changing. The rubbish built up over that time, too. There were only about two outlet plugs for two guests, and the toilet was so cramped that most bigger-built men would have trouble using it. Both the bed and room felt far too small. I wouldn’t book here again. It was very disappointing and spoiled my Kyoto experience.

The service was very good. On our second night of a three-night stay, the bathroom smell got worse, so we raised it with the front desk. They immediately agreed to move us to another room.

Having laundry on site was handy, and the room was clean, though the remote control could have been cleaner. It was comfortable, and surprisingly larger than the room I’d had at my previous hotel in Tokyo. The price and location were both good, with the train station and several restaurants just a short walk away.
