THE MACHIYA Kamiumeya

The location worked really well for us, with bus stops close by, a train station about an 800 m walk away with direct lines to Osaka, and Gion only a few bus stops away. The neighbourhood is quiet, and there’s great coffee nearby. The floor heating kept the room warm without making the air dry, and the toilets were fantastic. The room and beds were comfortable, though three adults felt cramped. I’d say it suits two adults and one child better. We booked for the garden view, but the garden wasn’t cared for well. There was a hose lying right in the middle, which was disappointing. Also, if you need to cook during your holiday for a special diet, there isn’t really space for that. It was a good stay overall.

Clean, comfortable guest house. The awkward part was having to walk 24 minutes to the check-in desk to collect the room key, which can eat into your time in Kyoto. I’d give it five stars otherwise. Management, please consider adding a lockbox or a similar option at the property itself.

The free laundry was a big help, and the staff made us feel right at home. We also loved the room’s look, which captured Kyoto’s traditional beauty, and the place was so close to the city centre and all the main sights. We had an amazing stay at Machiya Kamiemuya in Kyoto. A memorable experience, and I’d definitely recommend it when you’re in Kyoto.

We really enjoyed the cozy room and its look. Staying in a Machiya was a great experience, and the neighbourhood just beyond Kyoto’s busy streets was lovely.
