Nansuikaku

After a long drive, no solution was offered, even though I was ready to pay right away. Staff raised extra requirements about booking on the same day and needing a meal. Before setting out, I was staying at the Hilton Fukuoka, and their concierge called ahead and was clearly told that lunch and day-use of the onsen were available together. At reception I waited several minutes for help, then learned that day-use was only at a separate public onsen about a three-minute drive away. A private bath could be booked there, but it wasn't like the onsen shown in the hotel photos, which is for hotel guests only. Staff first said there were no rooms available, despite availability on the hotel's website, then acknowledged there was availability after I pointed it out. The communication lacked clarity and transparency. Very disappointing.

We'd love to come back. The staff were amazing, helping with our bags as we got off the bus and taking care of every request during our stay. We treasured every meal, which was one of the highlights of our whole trip in Japan. The area was lovely for an early morning run, with old traditional homes and a peaceful, quiet feel. The hot springs were nice, though I'd probably stick to the ones on the property. The ones that need a short drive didn't feel worth it. Massages were very reasonably priced.

The men's section lacks the view and little waterfall in the cold bath, which was a shame. But you can see gorgeous hills from the resting area, too, and the staff were nice. The onsen welcomes tattoos, and a day visit costs 800 yen per person. There are four outdoor pools at different temperatures, a sauna, and a cold-water bath with a small waterfall you can sit under. I liked that there was also a warm bath, not burning hot. The changing rooms had everything from body lotion and face wash to hair dryers. There's a rinse area in the room with shampoo, conditioner, and soap. The ride from Fukuoka took 20 minutes by motorbike, through valleys and hills full of beautiful colors and breathtaking scenery.

The food was a great part of the experience, and I got to try lots of new things that made the stay feel really Japanese. The rooms were comfortable, and the hotel was very spacious. I spent two days there and really enjoyed the open-air baths, plus the private baths and massages were affordable. The service was more than excellent. I'd definitely recommend spending a couple of days here to relax.
