Akame Onsen Kakure No Yu Taisenkaku

The 48 waterfalls trail is gorgeous, and the local 48 waterfalls beer is worth ordering, probably the best. Our nine-course kaiseki dinner was excellent, and breakfast was just as elaborate. This was our first ryokan and onsen stay. The hotel is a little dated, though it’s generally in good shape, and the service is superb.

The location is ideal, right by the Akame 48 waterfall, a must-see for nature lovers with stunning views. Dinner and breakfast were both great, too. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the hotel looks amazing, with lovely decor and interiors. There’s also a private onsen available for an extra charge, with advance booking, if you want a hot bath without other people. Really recommend!!!

We chose the beef dinner, which came with high-quality Iga beef, and it was very good. Drinks are available near reception. We stayed in the old building, in a Japanese-style room that can fit three or four futons. The indoor and outdoor onsens are separate, so you have to get dressed to walk between them. It’s a quiet, relaxing place.

The falls are very close, and there are onsens both indoors and outside, but our stay was far below what we expected. Booking through the hotel website cost much more than other sites, and the dinner was only okay for 33,000 yen a night. The room only had ceiling AC, and the warm air stayed near the ceiling. Since we slept on futons on the floor, it was so cold we couldn’t sleep at all. We also found bed bugs in our futon, as pictured. I complained to manager/CEO Mr Tamaki, but he did nothing and even seemed to avoid us. They said they’d send a letter and compensation, but two months later neither had arrived. Not recommended.
