Matsuya Ryokan

The rooms were spacious and comfortable, done in a traditional Japanese style, and the Onsen was relaxing. The older couple who run the place were lovely and happy to show us around or answer questions. They also shared interesting details about the ryokan’s history and its importance locally. I’ll gladly come back.

The ryokan’s food is the best I’ve had anywhere in Japan. I already miss it and wish I could eat it again. The location is fantastic for visiting shrines, and thank you for taking care of my laundry. The room was a little small, and the bathroom / Onsen closed at 10pm, which felt much too early. The food and location were exceptional, but that closing time was a real downside.

The traditional meals were the best part, and they even managed to provide me with a gluten-free alternative. The sento bath was lovely too. This is a family-run local inn right by Zenko-ji Temple, though still not too far from nagano station. The room matched what I expected: no shoes indoors, traditional furniture, and a futon. Just be ready to sit and sleep on the floor if you choose the traditional room.

The people were wonderful and the stay was comfortable at this modest ryokan close to Zenkoji. We especially enjoyed the optional kaiseki dinner, and the small bath was cozy. Breakfast was nice as well. We stayed one night, which seemed enough time for the area.
