KITAKARUIZAWA Golden Forest Hotel

The receptionist was extremely nice, and the onsen and sauna were both nice too. Breakfast, though, was very expensive, especially compared with what other hotels in Japan offered.

The Nintendo Switch rental was a nice touch, and I was generally satisfied with my stay. The building is three stories and fairly compact, which suited me. It feels a little old, but seems to have been renovated and was clean overall. The bath is also on the small side, with only about four washing areas, so there could be a wait when it's busy. My only complaints were that the open-air bath was extremely lukewarm and I had to wait about 10-15 minutes after sitting down for dinner. I stayed at the end of 2025.

The food and the restaurant staff made this stay especially enjoyable. The female staff were so thoughtful, polite, and kind, and I loved chatting with them and hearing local stories. It was the most pleasant meal I've had at a hotel. My steak course was delicious, and the vegetables were fresh, sweet, and crisp. At breakfast, there were one or two warm dishes such as omelets, sausages, bacon, and potatoes, along with good bread, vegetables, yogurt, and fruit. I ate far too much. The bathroom was spotless, and I really enjoyed the open-air bath and sauna. Our room was roomy and comfortable. The hotel isn't luxurious, just simple and relaxing, and everyone was friendly. The front desk staff were gentle and courteous too. I first booked in May but had to cancel because I was ill. I was grateful to be able to book again this time. Even though the season was about two months off, Kita-Karuizawa felt cool and refreshing in the intense summer heat, which felt like a real bonus. I'd love to come back in another season. We were coming as a group, and the front desk staff knew in advance and were wonderfully attentive. They were very polite, and the room was comfortable too. I'd definitely stay here again.
