Asian Guesthouse Border - Hostel

The place itself was clean and had what I needed, though the air conditioner cost coins during the day. I also wished there were a mosquito screen on the balcony so I could sit out without getting bitten. The owner’s manner made things uncomfortable. I tried making small talk during my stay, but he was curt and seemed annoyed, so I eventually kept it to a brief greeting. On my last day, I left my belongings at reception before checkout and planned to wait in the empty guesthouse until later in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. While I was making lunch, he came into the kitchen angry, said checkout had been an hour earlier and asked why I was cooking there. He kept repeating “unbelievable,” said he should charge me extra for using the kitchen, and gave me half an hour to leave. He also told me I should study Japanese language and culture. I don’t see how that had anything to do with our interaction. He was just rude. Without that confrontation, I would’ve given the place four stars.

This is a good spot for meeting people and chatting, and it’s close to Kouri island. There’s also a local soba place on 71 I’d recommend. But if you need a comfortable, quiet night’s sleep, this backpacker guesthouse may not suit you. I stayed in an upstairs double room and had a terrible night on an old, worn-out spring mattress. People from the dorm walked past all night, and the room didn’t smell very good.

The big, open Okinawa-style balcony is a lovely place to sit and unwind. I liked the wooden construction too. There’s parking, so getting here by car is probably best.

A welcoming, relaxing place with a good price. It’s a bit removed from the beach and other activities, so I’d suggest having a car. There’s a bus stop nearby, though, and buses run about once an hour.
