Setre Naramachi

The room felt a little cramped, but I still had a really pleasant stay. I especially liked the library, with its lovely view over Sarusawa Pond and the deer wandering nearby. There are complimentary snacks and drinks, and the service was excellent. The hotel also offers a free morning tour, including one in English, though communication can still be a bit difficult sometimes. Nara Park is an easy walk away. Getting here from the train station is uphill, but manageable.

We stayed one night, hoping for a bit of luxury after a very low-grade hotel in kyoto. The hotel itself is pretty, with a lovely wooden style, and the location is hard to beat. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, with a nice view of the pond. Food was the letdown. We didn't enjoy the Japanese breakfast much: steamed vegetables, rice, pork and some kind of soup, with very little flavor. I have celiac disease, and they said they could make dinner gluten-free, which saved us having to search for food for hours. But the meal was pricey and mostly disappointing. The wagyu beef was the only part that felt worth the price. The staff suggested sparkling wine with dinner, but didn't mention an extra charge. We found out at checkout that two glasses cost 2,200. That seemed odd with an open lounge right beside the dining room offering complimentary drinks and snacks, including alcohol. The location and hotel are nice, but the food is expensive and not the best.

There are three fluffy hens in the courtyard, and you can pet them. The library has rocking chairs and a record player, too. I liked the earthy, wood-filled interior, and the snack bar was well stocked, sometimes with special caneles. Breakfast featured fresh local produce. Just be aware they don't provide toothbrushes or other usual single-use items.

The food was amazing, and my room was beautiful. I felt comfy and cozy from the minute I arrived. Best hotel of my trip, and honestly the best-designed hotel in Japan. 💛
