We almost stuck with a familiar ryokan chain, but changed our booking to Kanon on a hunch. By the time we left, we were glad we’d taken the chance. The place is quiet and modern, set beside the Hoki River, with just 10 villa-style units, so it feels private while still having the character of a traditional inn. The villa had plenty of room, a private garden, and an open-air onsen bath big enough for two. I also ended up loving the massage chair, which was a surprise favorite while taking in the view. The complimentary minibar had a generous mix of sake, beer, apple juice, sparkling water, and coffee. In the shared onsen there’s one outdoor bath and two indoor ones, a good size for the number of guests. The water felt wonderfully silky. There’s a small gym, dry sauna, and bedrock sauna too, but the lounge by the fireplace was the standout. Drinks and, at certain hours, ice cream were free, and roasting marshmallows there after dinner was a lovely touch. Dinner was balanced and delicious, with ingredients like abalone and shark fin worked into the courses. The portions were so large we were full, but we finished everything out of courtesy. They even packed a little late-night snack for us. Check-in came with sparkling wine and nicely presented snacks. The staff don’t speak English, so explanations about the facilities and meals took some work with translation apps. It wasn’t seamless, but they were kind and made a real effort to help us feel looked after. That warmth is what made the stay memorable. We arrived unsure and left grateful, and would happily come back.

Dinner was a real treat, with whole abalone, lobster sashimi, and beautifully marbled A5 wagyu. Breakfast was lighter, with plenty of vegetables and tofu to balance things out. They also made sure we had enough to eat between meals, with a stocked minibar in the room, rice balls for supper, and a self-service bar every evening. Little cups of sake were included too, which you could float in the onsen water. We spent two nights at this lush ryokan. It has just seven private rooms, each with its own onsen looking out over a river and autumn colors, so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Service was faultless. It’s great value for the experience, though staff speak only Japanese. You’ll need a car to reach the inn and get around the area.

The food was tasty and satisfying, and both the service and the atmosphere felt thoughtfully done.

Simply the best!

I used the room’s private open-air bath twice, once at night and once in the morning. It stays supplied with hot spring water, so there’s no need to refill it. After dark, the sky was packed with stars, which made the soak especially memorable. The place itself was wonderfully quiet. Dinner was delicious, with local vegetables, meat, and eggs, and the course was filling enough that you’ll want to arrive hungry. If you’re after a luxury inn in Shiobara Onsen, I’d recommend it without hesitation.
