We visited when it was really quiet, and couldn’t understand why. It deserves to be full all year round. The free parking makes it especially handy if you have a rental car. The Japanese-style room felt special, breakfast was really good, and the onsen was a real treat. It’s a lovely stay if you want a traditional ryokan experience with the amenities of a larger hotel. You won’t be disappointed.

A beautiful heritage shrine.

Internet is the weak point here. The hotel’s connection is spotty and really only strong in the lobby. Most guests are Japanese and have their own connections, but other Japanese hotels I’ve stayed at had a portable device to boost the signal. The staff are especially courteous, and the pickup and drop-off shuttle is a godsend. The ryokan is good value, quiet, and set away from the bustle of Nikko town. The Kaiseki meals were tasty and very filling, and I liked the range of dishes.

We stayed as a family over the weekend in March 2026. The meal was a set course rather than a buffet, and the food was excellent, a lovely showcase of Japanese cooking. I first thought the servings looked small, but there was a lot of variety. If you have growing kids, order rice from the start. The side dishes help them eat more. Many of the foods may be new to children, but nutritional education is hard to do at home if they never encounter things like this. Breakfast was satisfying too. The room wasn’t especially large, but it was very clean and tidy, with no dust, dampness, or mold. They laid out our futons while we were at dinner, which was a nice touch since many hotels now expect you to do it yourself. For security, though, you can tell the front desk you’d rather make your own futon and don’t need the service. The Wi-Fi didn’t work at all, which was a problem. There aren’t many rooms, so I think they should address it. There isn’t much entertainment at the lodging, and people need to check social media and plan the next day in their rooms. The bath was very good. The water was clear and had no smell, and I could taste something in it, though I couldn’t identify the taste. I spent about half an hour in the single-person outdoor bath, which I hadn’t done for a while, and there were no other guests there. I guess they don’t heat that bath until around evening. It was quite warm, which suited me, and if it’s cold you can use another warm bath. The cypress bath was nice, but the faucet only ran for a very short time, maybe under five seconds. It had been a while since I’d stayed somewhere with no foreign staff. The service may feel old-fashioned, but it’s solid and current. The difference is small, but you can hear it in their tone and the words they choose. I wouldn’t say it’s worth paying an extra 10,000 yen, but I was very satisfied, and there’s no need to debate whether the service suits everyone. I arrived in the evening and couldn’t use the shuttle, so a taxi cost 2,400 yen. In the morning they gave me a free ride to Toshogu Shrine. The place itself didn’t really feel like Nikko, though maybe that’s true of any accommodation. I wonder where you get that feeling of Nikko. Maybe it’s the view from the window.

Two of us stayed one night without meals. The room was very clean and had everything we needed, including Wi-Fi, a humidifier, and power outlets. Big windows made it feel open, and we slept comfortably. The bath was the best part, really great. There were also well-stocked vending machines, which made it easy to relax with a drink. It’s rare to find a Japanese-style room where smoking is allowed, so that was helpful for us. We’re looking forward to having a meal there next time. Thanks!
