The auntie and her family deserve a special mention for looking after the place so well. Service was very good, and Google Translate worked fine when we needed to communicate. We didn’t eat there, though I saw other guests enjoying dinner. Our tatami room was clean and nice, but a bit cramped for three people, especially once the futons were laid out. There was barely room to move or put luggage. It’s near Karasawa Ski area, while the main town, restaurants, Nagasaka, and Hikage slopes are about a 10-15 minute walk away. I’d recommend it for one person or a couple.

We had a great view from our room, and the drying room worked a treat. Everything was clean and well kept, and the staff were friendly, happy to use a translation app when needed. Picking up a little Japanese might help make those friendships last, though. It felt like a proper Japanese homestay, with good meals in the house and a small onsen and bathhouse downstairs. The lower chairlift is tucked away less than 10 minutes on foot. We loved our stay and would come back. Don’t skip the meals!

The tatami rooms, downstairs spa and washroom, and location all made for a lovely snow cabin stay. We felt welcome and looked after the whole time, and it was nice to stroll around the area. The staff were SO generous and sweet, and the home-cooked Japanese-style meals were fantastic.

The breakfast is authentic and very good, offered daily for a reasonable price. There’s also a small bath in the basement for a quick wash and soak if you don’t feel like going to the public onsen. Nakao no-yu is only a few minutes away, while the gondola is about a 20ish minute walk. This traditional-style place is very well kept. The heat was turned up quite high when I arrived, but it was easy enough to work out. Booking through booking.com was simple, and I’d definitely stay again.

The location worked out pretty well. It’s not in the town center, but a few restaurants, a convenience store, the regular bus stop, and the shuttle stop are close by. The slopes are around a 12 minute walk, and the busier tourist center is maybe eight minutes away. I loved the meals. Breakfast was amazing, and we ordered dinner one night, which was tasty, beautifully presented, and incredibly cheap. The lodge was super clean, including the basement shower and onsen area, which was relaxing after skiing in the hot water. Our room had its own sink and toilet, which was convenient. The bed was a futon on the floor rather than a Western bed, but it was very comfortable. This was my first time staying in a traditional Japanese hotel or lodge, and I had a great experience.
