Tokiwaya

A really nice onsen for families!

The room and the main bath were okay. The large public bath had a little view of the ocean, but not much. I really liked Tachibana-no-Yu, the free private open-air bath. It was spacious and lovely. There was more food than I could finish, which made me feel bad about leaving some, but it was delicious, with seafood and gratin. Everything was presented beautifully and looked great. The male staff member who explained things was especially wonderful, and had a lovely voice. The service was excellent too. The building isn't new, but you can tell they've put in effort over a long time.

I stayed on December 28th. The price wasn't high, but the food was seriously good. The shabu-shabu broth had two flavor levels, and the miso and chicken from the Miyama Bokkei-yaki went so well with rice. I'm 40 and have stayed at several ryokans, but Tokiwaya's food struck me as the best. The open-air bath is on the ryokan's 6th floor, with a great view. The mixed bath is available when nobody else is using it, and there's also a fairly large open-air bath in the regular bath. ☺️

I picked this place specifically because of an earlier collaboration, while traveling in Toda. The room was very spacious, more than enough for one person, and the air conditioning was already on when I walked in. The hot water was heating up too. There were a couple of things that bothered me. Nobody helped put guests' shoes in the shoe cabinet, and you might need to do it yourself, but nobody explained that. Also, the lights in the public bathroom were off during opening hours, and that wasn't mentioned at check-in.
