The host was really friendly, but the place looks like it has seen better days. For what it costs, the condition is disappointing. The room dividers are traditional Japanese style, which means they're literally paper.

The rooms are small and the place felt pretty messy. Getting back is also a problem: the last bus from the city centre to the hostel leaves at 8:45pm. It's a bit far from the centre.
The building itself is worth a look. The location is beautiful, the food is good and fairly priced, and the staff are friendly.
The old wooden construction inside gave the restaurant a warm, comforting feel, and I enjoyed my meal there. I had come because I heard it was being renovated from an old elementary school building. From the front it looked like a hot spring inn, which was heartwarming to see. I'd like to come back.
I was cycling around Lake Biwa when I stayed here, and the building made a strong impression. The youth hostel's male owner explained everything clearly and kindly, so even as a first-time visitor it was easy to follow. He even drove me to a nearby hot spring that evening. I'm very grateful.
