The buffet supper was a letdown. By the time we arrived, much of the “live kitchen” food had already been made. Nobody seemed to touch the tempura, shrimp, or Sasebo burgers because they looked like they’d been sitting out for a while. People mostly stuck to cold dishes like sashimi and sushi, or the things they cooked themselves, like shabu-sabu. I asked if they could make a fresh aji-fry. The staff had two four-person huddles right in front of everyone, which made me feel as if I’d asked for something inappropriate. Then a floor staff member asked if I really wanted just one, saying they’d make it now but wouldn’t make another. That seems to miss the point of a buffet. I felt bad, so I asked for two. It was a very poor experience, and I felt bad simply for asking for something fresh from the “Live Kitchen.” We spoke to the manager afterward, but he seemed uninterested and ushered us away as quickly as possible.

The hotel feels dated, but the buffet dinner and breakfast are good for the price. The live-kitchen buffet was sumptuous. Lots of three-generation families were there for the year-end holiday, which made for a vibrant atmosphere. Our boys are grown up!

The location is good for tourist spots, but despite being advertised as “Remodeled,” several parts of the hotel, including some rooms, still need major repairs or updating.

We paid 9,900 yen per person for a superior twin room with breakfast. The room felt a bit old, the mattress was on the hard side, and the fridge made some noise. Breakfast bread was delicious, while the rest was just okay. Parking was convenient, with a very large carpark.

A real gem for a high-end stay around Sasebo, with five-star dining and accommodations. I’ve been here several times over the years, and even got married on the premises 16 years ago. It’s a really nice hotel.
