We used this hotel as a base for the area, including Gujo Hachiman, Otaki, and Shirakawa-Go, and getting to the expressway was straightforward. It was one of the better Route Inns we've stayed in. The staff welcomed us warmly, and check-in with the Route In App was quick. We were in the annex, in a room big enough for two with the usual facilities and toiletries. There's a roomy car park and a FamilyMarket a couple of minutes away on foot. Wi-Fi was quick and easy to join. Breakfast had a good range and different choices each day, though a few dishes weren't very hot. Dinner at the restaurant was good too, with plenty of dishes and actual staff taking orders, so nobody was using that awkward tablet.

The staff were wonderful, and the small room was nice, though the hotel is a bit out of the way. Getting there means sending your luggage ahead and walking over the hill from the train station. That walk is mind-numbingly beautiful. Breakfast is included, and at $12-15 less than Tokyo, it feels worth it.

I'd strongly recommend staying somewhere else. We tried every way we could think of to contact the hotel after booking and never got a reply. We were worried about conditions after the typhoon and a tornado alert issued by the meteorological agency of japan. The staff and room were even worse than the hotel's communication.

The beds are hard as rock, and the fittings inside are dated. There are only two power sockets in the room, placed much too close together. Breakfast was okay, but it closes unbelievably early. I'd look for somewhere else.
