I couldn’t really make out the signs at the onsen, but it seemed to have baths with 50% and 100% acid water. The full-strength one made me feel like I was burning right away. I’m not sure whether it’s healthy, but it’s definitely an experience. Such an interesting place, apparently home to Japan’s most acidic onsen 😅.

This felt like a real Japanese onsen at its best, almost like living on the edge of a volcano. The bus ride from Lake Tazawa takes about 90 minutes. People come believing its radium has magical medicinal healing effects. I cooked my own dinner, though they do offer two meals. The steam room is a must try. The water pH is 1.5 to 2, so be careful.

I’ve been to a lot of onsens in Japan, and Tamagawa is my favorite. The water, facilities, scenery, and atmosphere all make it a unique place. A must visit.
