The room and dining are very basic, and with so few staff, you shouldn’t expect the service level of other onsen ryokan. I understand managing a ryokan in such a remote place, especially in winter, isn’t easy, so set your expectations accordingly. A day trip just to enjoy the bath might be a better fit. Choosing when to go is hard, though, because the onsen is stunning in winter and pretty amazing at night too.

Getting a meal that worked for a group member’s dietary restriction was the only small snag. For that particular request, updates could only be made by phone in Japanese. The service was excellent, though, and the local cuisine was satisfying, with dishes I hadn’t tried before. The outdoor onsen is the reason I’d make the effort to reserve this ryokan, which is famously hard to book, like others around Nyuto Onsen. It’s at the far end of the area, so it feels very quiet and private. There are only about 18 rooms, by my count. The rooms were in better shape than I expected, though the baths themselves are old and traditional. Service was exceptional. The main outdoor bath is mixed-gender, with women-only hours at night; the indoor baths are separated by gender. Highly recommended for a special onsen experience.

On a winter day trip to Nyuto Onsen, I went to the one right at the terminal bus stop. It cost ¥800 per person, plus ¥300 for a small towel, and the service was friendly. I especially liked the women-only outdoor bath and the open view over the snow-covered hill. Hot spring water keeps flowing into the bath, and you can touch the snow and make a snowman while soaking.

The mixed-gender outdoor bath is what this hotel is famous for. It takes about a five-minute walk outdoors to reach it, and at night you might see couples heading there together. Booking here was easier than at some other places nearby, which seem difficult to reserve online. I booked about half a year before our February 2025 visit, and the price was much lower than some of the others too.
