The buffet breakfast was the low point. We got there around 8:20, before the 8:45 cutoff, but much of the food was already gone and the remaining items looked sad and were cold. Other ryokans and hotels we've visited have had things like eggs cooked fresh at a chef's station. This felt more like a depressing cafeteria, and the dirty trays and silverware also raised health concerns. We chose Rantei because it was presented as kid-friendly, and the family facilities mostly delivered: a small, enjoyable play area with a few toys and lots of books, a 40-degree onsen, and roomy tatami rooms with baby-friendly amenities available on request. The open lounge overlooking the play area was a favorite. We could relax there with free drinks, including wine and beer, and tasty little desserts. I can't comment on the alcoholic drinks, but the juices tasted artificial, not like 100% juice. I wished milk was served there, though bottles could at least be bought from the vending machine. The food was disappointing overall. We had a private room, which we needed with two rowdy children, but the kaiseki dinner lacked flavor. We also ordered extra sashimi, which may have been too much since the meal already included a sashimi dish. We enjoyed parts of our stay, but will probably choose somewhere else next time.

The rooms were enormous, even by Japanese and Western standards, and our family of five fit comfortably in one. The view was very nice and comforting to look out at. The onsen hotel was above average in most ways, apart from the room size, which was actually a plus. If you find a good rate, it's a terrific deal. One thing to watch is the booking price on Agoda. It advertised a price that didn't include breakfast and dinner, and there was a substantial extra charge for those meals if breakfast was even offered to you. If you skip the add-on, dinner is available at the hotel cafe on the third floor, reasonably priced and delicious, but breakfast is then up to you. The third-floor bar has all-you-can-drink service and snacks from 3 PM to 11 PM.

The traditional Japanese dinner was very well done, but breakfast was a generic buffet and a bit of a letdown. Our room was surprisingly huge, though somewhat dated, and the staff couldn't really communicate in English. It's a fairly commercial onsen hotel. The onsen itself was quite good, with a genuine onsen feel at a fair price, even if the view wasn't much. The location is a little far from Sendai.
