At Giovanni in the ryokan, I had the seven-course modern Italian dinner on 21.2.2026. The roast wagyu beef was excellent, with a substantial serving. The hirame (flounder) ceviche with hotaruika (firefly squid) on orange tartine was very good, and the rigstoni was tasty and refined, lighter than the heavy cafe kind, though its beef ragout was tough. The chickpea soup was decent but could have used a little salt. We didn't ask for any, since eating healthy was better. 😂 The cod milt and seabream with sakura shrimp and blue cheese risotto were very good too. Dessert was a very good mango parfait, though rather standard, and a macaron that wasn't too sweet.

After walking the Kumano Kodo, we were hoping for a couple of luxurious nights. The suite in the annexe was spacious and wonderful, with great views. Most of the staff were very friendly, as most Japanese are, but it was disappointing that hotel policy seems to require them all to wear masks. That made things feel more impersonal and sterile, and their English was harder to understand. I don't understand why so many Japanese people in service jobs still wear masks. It brings back upsetting memories of covid times.

The pillows were so uncomfortable I had to use four just to feel like I had one pillow. For the price, it definitely wasn't worth it and felt like staying in a motel room. If you have tattoos, even a small one, don't come here. It's insane in 2025 that guests can't use the pool or ossein just because there's ink on their skin. PS currently staying in the hotel

The spa was relaxing, the sauna and pool areas were great, and the pool was a lot of fun. The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming throughout the stay. The restaurant was the weak point for me: dinner was Italian-style, but the flavor didn't quite work, and it was very heavy on beef, which isn't really my thing. Even the bread wasn't fresh. Breakfast also had roast beef, a bit much first thing in the morning. I usually prefer a buffet breakfast. The warm, friendly people almost made up for the food. Maybe they need a new chef, just saying 😄

I was looking forward to staying at Infinito Hotel Shirahama, but on arrival I was told I couldn't use the pool because I have tattoos. It's 2025, and being judged like a criminal over ink on my body is unacceptable. This policy feels outdated and deeply disrespectful to international guests. I came to relax, not be treated with suspicion. My tattoos are personal and have nothing to do with crime or Yakuza. I felt unwelcome from the start, and this isn't how a modern hotel should treat guests. Even small tattoos will get you excluded here. Not recommended for tattooed travelers.
