The lobby carpet really needs a cleaner. It looked like people had walked in from skiing or the onsen. Still, I was very happy with my three days here. The place, baths, service, and rooms were great, and the rooms had fresh air. There was even free beer from a machine in the hall, a great little extra.

The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were delicious, and the stay was wonderfully relaxing. This gem in Shuzenji had spacious rooms and peaceful private and public onsens. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Shuzenji.

The morning outdoor private onsen was a real treat. It was nearly empty, and the atmosphere was amazing. My room at Tokino-Kairo Kikuya in Shuzenji also had its own private hot spring bath. Breakfast was served in a private room, which suited me well as a solo traveler. Kikuya is an old ryokan dating back to the Meiji era, but it’s been beautifully maintained, and the service was warm and attentive. The corridors have old photos, including a reminder that Natsume Sōseki stayed here for over two months to recuperate. I was in the annex, reached by crossing a little suspension bridge, which was quite fun. There were free popsicles by the public bath too. It completely fulfilled my dreams of what a hot spring ryokan should be.

The water room (mizu no kataribe) was unforgettable. In the morning, waking up by the bridge and hearing the water flow was wonderful, and the room’s modern Japanese design was lovely. The food mattered most to me, and both breakfast and dinner were excellent. It was a peaceful stay, and I hope I can go back one day.

I was sad to leave and will absolutely visit again. The staff were incredible, the rooms immaculate, and we loved our time here. We had a private onsen, which was wonderful. I also booked a massage and wasn’t disappointed, so it’s definitely worth getting one if you can. I’d give this place 100/10 if I could!
