The staff were kind and handed out a welcome gift, like ice cream or a bottle of water. There's a Sukiya within walking distance, and a convenience shop along the way. The hotel was actually really nice and convenient, and the whole stay was good.

It was better than I expected. The building looks old, but the inside seems to have been renovated over time. The service was nice, and at check-in you can choose breakfast from about 10 options. Highly recommended.

The only downside was the heavy tobacco smell in my non-smoking room. The air conditioner was so disgusting I wouldn't use it. I spent the night with the windows open in mid-November, and smoke from another room kept coming into mine. Not a good night for someone with asthma.

The welcome was a nice touch, especially the interesting Asari cup soup drink at check-in. Breakfast was tasty too. The service was excellent, and for a budget hotel the facilities were good. I appreciated the nearby amenities, the parking, and all the local information, activities, and products in the room. I wish I could come back, but I'm heading off to tour castles today. The scenery and roads around here are lovely. I love Kochi and Shikoku. Thanks!

During my two months in Shikoku, the Hotel Avan was the cheapest place I stayed. The henro special rate was just 3400 yen for a decent single room without meals. I needed an extra night, but couldn't get that same rate or keep the room, so the price went up to 5900 yen. Even so, it was a decent deal, especially since the washing machines and soap are free.
