Matoi Hostel & Bar

The bar and restaurant downstairs felt cozy and welcoming. The food choices were somewhat limited but still delicious. Towels cost 100 yen to rent, and both laundry service and non-electric bike rental were a bit expensive at 1000 yen each, so I would have used them if they cost a little less. I spent three nights in a dorm bed. The bed was comfortable, with a proper thick mattress rather than the thin bed rolls you often get in other hostels. There wasn't much room beside it for belongings, so I had to wedge my laptop into the gap, but it wasn't a big deal. The room had plenty of luggage storage and didn't feel too cramped. Bathrooms were separated by gender and cleaned daily. Guests also have a private dining area with a fully equipped kitchen and fridge and pantry space for food. It's a good budget option off the beaten path, though a bit far from everything. Buses run nearby semi-regularly, and the hotel offers a free shuttle to Gumma-Soja station at check-in and check-out. The staff were helpful and friendly, and spoke English.

The pickup and drop-off service came in really handy and helped us get to the places we wanted to visit. Staff knew the area and helped us work out our travel plans. We also enjoyed the food and drinks, and there were bikes and e-scooters available to rent. I'd recommend staying here.

As an Aussie, I really liked the bar's vibe and would come back for another 12 beers. The burger was good too, and the rooms were clean and spacious. Jorge was a legend.

George and John were great, and the staff went well beyond what I expected. I enjoyed the food and drinks at the bar, and it was easy to have a good time. The nearest train station is a bit far, but if staff are available to give you a lift, it's no problem. Parking is handy, and the nearest supermarket has everything you need.
