Oyado Sumire-so

I came back after about ten years, and the food was just as amazing as I remembered. The staff were every bit as kind and helpful too. I hope I don’t wait another ten years to return.

Dinner was so filling that I somehow still arrived at breakfast hungry the next morning. The Hida beef loin, grilled with miso on a Hoba leaf, was tender, and the rich but elegant fat with the grilled miso made the rice hard to stop eating. I’d saved room for white rice, but the container was full even though I was dining alone, haha. The Hoba Sushi alone had enough rice for a whole bowl, and after all the other dishes I was completely stuffed. I stayed one night on a two-day hot spring trip, visiting Hirayu no Mori on the first day and Himeshaga no Yu on the second. Sumire-so was quiet, in between the two, and they gave me a corner room with eight tatami mats. I seemed to be the only guest, since just one meal setting was laid out in the dining area. There were so many dishes it was overwhelming. Everything was seasoned well and delicious, though I wish they’d served the mountain vegetable tempura and grilled trout warm if they weren’t too busy. Even microwaved would have been fine. Breakfast was pretty good, even after all that dinner. There was no toilet or sink in the room, but since I was alone it didn’t bother me, haha. I’d already bathed, but took a quick soak to warm up before bed. It was a very nice place to stay.
