Ryokan Hida Beef - Hida Gyu No Yado

The food was great, and I appreciated getting two different meals during my two-night stay. I also liked that this small inn wasn’t crowded. My room was in good condition, though the bathroom felt a bit small, and the footsteps from the room above were very annoying. It’s a little out of the way, but you can reach it by public bus from Takayama. Each room has its own onsen, plus two outdoor private onsens available first come, first served, as well as separate public baths for men and women. One of my better ryokan stays. Highly recommended.

The three outdoor private hot springs were a real treat. They’re first come, first served, much larger than the bath in the room, and always free whenever we wanted one. Our Japanese-style room had its own outdoor bath too, and this one-night stay became the highlight of our two weeks in Japan. It’s a family-run onsen hotel that takes around 14 groups of guests a day, so it felt quiet, relaxing and personal. Dinner and breakfast were unforgettable: traditional dishes, delicious steamed wagyu beef at dinner, and a flavourful breakfast. They also provide kimonos to wear, which added to the authentic feel. The Nohi bus from Takayama goes directly to the hotel, with a stop right outside. The value for the price was outstanding. We’d definitely recommend it to friends and family. At dinner, Vi Loc explained each dish and served us the vegetables and Hida beef once they were cooked. Afterwards, she brought us cold water and reminded us to drink plenty after using the onsen. She was very attentive throughout, showing us our room and explaining how the onsen, common bath and Yukata worked, as well as when the futons would be made up. The meals are at 6pm for dinner and 8am for breakfast, with reception calling your room. The check-in was simple, with clear instructions, and staff spoke English without any communication trouble. They greeted us at the car park and helped carry our luggage. There are five to seven free parking spaces.

There are lots of old decorations and pictures, so you can see this onsen hotel has been around for a long time. It was still clean and gave an authentic onsen experience. The food was good, with a wide variety of dishes.
