J-Hoppers Kumano Yunomine Guesthouse - Hostel

They provide bedding and porridge in the mornings, and the hosts are extremely friendly and happy to offer advice about the area. The accommodation is impeccable for the price, with three private onsens available. Incredible value for this hostel.

The staff are very kind, and the onsens are fantastic. You can buy food inside, and it’s easy to stay here with kids. They even had the shoe size we needed. It’s especially good value if you book a private room. The location is ideal, particularly if you arrive after finishing the Kumano Kodo trail from Hongu.

The three baths all use onsen water, and I especially recommend the semi-outdoor one. I was there on a snowy night, and the snowflakes, hot water, and ethereal yunohana (onsen flowers) in the bath made it memorable. The hostel is conveniently located in Yunomine Onsen, and the staff gave us helpful advice for the pilgrimage. They can also help arrange Yamato deliveries. Free okayu porridge with pickled plums and drip coffee are served in the morning. Remember to get the vouchers for their sister establishment You-Got-It Bar, since that may be your only dinner option in town.

The people working here made us feel at home right away. When we arrived, we had a problem with our next accommodation, and they spent hours helping us sort it out. The room was very clean, and the private onsens, both indoor and outdoor, were beautiful. The walk from the bus is short and lovely, and the hostel is right in the center of town. We saw a few monkeys watching us as we walked up the path. So welcoming. I wish we didn’t have to leave.
