The room was tidy, and the service was good in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. This hotel sits at the highest altitude of any hotel in Japan. Walking around was enjoyable, with sunsets, sunrises, and lots of stars to look for at night. It was cloudy, so I couldn’t see the stars.

At dinner, we were left without rice and soup until we were nearly done eating. The staff hadn’t explained what was coming next, so we didn’t know whether to wait or ask. We’d arrived first, but another table that came later got their rice and soup before us. It felt like other guests were being prioritized, and we were very upset. The manager apologized, but service like this is unacceptable at 58,000 JPY a night. The keiseiki dinner service was terrible, and at that price, the experience was embarrassing.

My spouse and I stayed at the Tateyama Kogen Hotel in a quiet, peaceful Japanese-style room, where we could really relax. The staff were kind, and their attentive service made the place feel warm. Dinner was delicious, as was the breakfast buffet. We couldn’t see the starry sky because the weather was poor, but the large public bath warmed us right through, even though it was a little hot. Afterward, drinking the tasty spring water made for a relaxing end to the bath. We left feeling refreshed in body and mind. We’d love to return in a different season.

The quiet atmosphere was one of my favorite parts. There weren’t many guests, and everyone was calm and considerate. Staying at Tateyama Kogen Hotel was a little expensive, but it was worth it for a place I’d dreamed of visiting. The staff were wonderfully welcoming, and the food was delicious. From Murodo, it’s one bus stop toward Toyama. The bus usually won’t stop there unless you reserve in advance, which is a bit inconvenient, though it may help keep the place so peaceful. If you enjoy hiking, walking around Murodo is lovely too. I’m really glad I finally made the trip. Thank you!

I’d read about the location before arriving, but it still felt a little unsettling on my first visit. The inn is close to the bus stop, though there’s another inn right in front of the Tengudaira bus stop. When no bus is passing, the only sound is basically the wind. It should be fine for people who know the area, but some signs would make things feel more reassuring.
